Hopkinton-Based Solect Energy Makes Multi-Year Funding Commitment to Local Nonprofit and Challenges Local Donors to do the Same

Live4Evan, a nonprofit organization founded in the memory of Hopkinton’s Evan Girardi launches five-year fundraising campaign to house more families seeking treatment for their child’s congenital heart defect in Boston. Their local board finds their first campaign donor in Hopkinton-based, Solect Energy.

HOPKINTON,  April 10, 2021 —- Live4Evan provides temporary housing in Boston, MA for families with children being treated for congenital heart disease at a nearby hospital. Due to the overwhelming need and extremely high occupancy rate, Live4Evan launched the Housing for Heart Heroes campaign in 2021. The Housing for Heart Heroes campaign is a five-year, $450,000 campaign to more than triple the number of units available to house families and end the waitlist for temporary housing for families coming to Boston to support their child’s treatment.

In April 2021, Hopkinton-based Ken Driscoll, CEO and Co-Founder of Solect Energy, stepped up and made a multi-year commitment to the campaign, while encouraging other local donors to do the same.

“Live4Evan harnesses all of the great energy of the Hopkinton-community and Solect Energy is proud to be a part of their efforts to support more families seeking treatment for their child’s congenital heart defect at Boston’s hospitals” Ken Driscoll said.  “We are so committed to their efforts, we will match any donation to Live4Evan’s Housing for Heart Heroes campaign from other Hopkinton-based donors up to $5,000 per year, totaling $25,000.”

Jack Nealon, a good friend of Evan Girardi’s from childhood and one of the Founders of Live4Evan says commitments like this from local companies are critical to the success of their ability to provide housing to more families. “We are so proud to partner with Ken, Jim, Craig and the rest of the Solect Energy team to issue the Solect Challenge to our community.  At any given time, there are as many as 40 families on the waitlist for housing while their child is being treated at a Boston-based hospital. The challenge grant from Solect Energy will go a long way to helping us reduce the number of families on that waitlist” says Jack Nealon, Executive Director at Live4Evan.

About Live4Evan

Live4Evan was founded in honor of Evan Girardi, who was born on October 4, 1989 with a congenital heart defect (CHD). Despite a difficult diagnosis and spending countless weeks and months at Boston Children’s Hospital, Evan lived his life to the fullest and gave everything he could to others in his life. In 2010, at the age of 20, Evan passed away from his heart condition. Rather than allow Evan’s passing to put an end to the life and legacy that Evan’s energy built, his friends and family formed Live4Evan to serve as a testament to the power of relationships and the importance of having loved ones by your side. Real Estate Owners Have More Options Than Ever Before for Solar Energy

Five Simple Guidelines for Making the Best Choice

The good news for property owners and real estate developers is that when it comes to solar energy, there are now more options and incentives than ever before. The challenge is that assessing these options and finding a solar partner who fits your unique requirements can be a bit daunting. To help you think about how to best approach your solar energy strategy we have outlined 5 simple guidelines to help you through the process.

Consider the Goldilocks Factor:

Essentially there are three size groups for solar energy systems, with some overlap. The smallest is residential and is typically less than 10kW, but often gets categorized under 25kW; next is commercial scale, that is typically within the 25-500kW range (but can be as large as 1000-2000kW), and is usually installed on the roof (or as a solar canopy) for commercial and industrial buildings; and lastly, utility scale projects are usually counted in several megawatts (MW) and are generally ground mount installations. Each category requires a different set of skills, knowledge and experience from your provider, so it is a good idea to look for a company that specializes in your type of project. For the vast majority of commercial real estate owners that would be a commercial scale provider.

Find the Best Financing Model for your Specific Business:

There are now a myriad of ways to finance and operate a solar energy system. They can range from a behind-the-meter system that is owned by the customer and provides on-site power which lowers or eliminates energy bills, to simply leasing your unused roof-space to a solar developer who will finance, build and operate the system and sell the power to the local utility. Amongst these options, there are certain advantages and disadvantages depending on the specifics of the site, the building, the on-site energy load and the nature of the business. A good solar partner will work with you to analyze your unique circumstances and business needs, and  present all the different investment options so that you can make the best choice for your specific goals.

Look for More than Just Electricity:

A good solar energy system delivers more than just electrons, it can also tell you a lot about your energy load; i.e., how much power you use, and when and where you are using it. Today many solar energy systems are paired with remote sensing monitors that can gather data and assemble it into a user friendly dashboard. This gives energy consumers transparency into how much their system produces, how much they are buying from the utility and where the major load centers are located. In turn, this gives building and/or business owners the insights required to identify utility billing discrepancies, energy efficiency investment opportunities and even the ability to bill tenants individually. Look for a provider who has experience with different energy monitoring data systems and who can also provide solutions to improve your overall energy profile.

Don’t Forget about O&M:

Although solar energy systems are very reliable, a good operations and maintenance (O&M) program will more than pay for itself by proactively monitoring the system and making sure it is continually operating at peak efficiency and maximizing your ROI. In addition, a good service provider will ensure that if issues arise, the system is fixed quickly with minimal disruption. Obviously for O&M, you want a local provider who has a track record in your community and can show you examples of other customers in your area where they are providing O&M services. Many solar providers only offer installation services, however if you have a system without an O&M plan, it’s advisable to look for a local solar company that can offer full O&M capabilities.

Think about Augmenting or Expanding your Existing System:

If you already have a solar energy system, you may still want to consider some other options that could further reduce costs, build resiliency and provide additional financial benefits. Energy storage is becoming an increasingly popular option for building owners as it can reduce expensive demand charges and also provide emergency power during power outages. There are many new incentives that make energy storage a very attractive investment option. You may also look to increase the value of your system by expanding it. An experienced commercial solar partner can help you look at your options for rooftop expansion, adding a ground mount system or even a solar canopy. Canopies are great options that provide additional benefits by offering protected parking and also receive added incentives in some states.

Whether you are just considering solar or looking for ways to enhance your existing system, there are many compelling opportunities.  A qualified, reputable solar partner will work with you to understand your business needs, develop a set of options and help you decide the best course of action. Make sure they have experience in the areas that are relevant to you, and feel free to check their references with existing customers. If you follow these guidelines, you should feel confident that you are making the best long-term decision for your business.

SOLECT ENERGY’S ROOF-TOP SOLAR ARRAY PROJECTED TO COVER 100% OF MEDFORD DPW’S ELECTRICITY NEEDS

The City of Medford, Massachusetts, has collaborated with Solect Energy and PowerOptions to install a 235-kW solar energy system on the roof of the city’s new DPW Building. The array consists of 588 solar panels, which are projected to produce approximately 300,000 kWh of energy annually. Medford anticipates the array will generate nearly 100% of the DPW’s annual demand for electricity, for a projected first year savings of $11,000.

“The city has been making strides toward our mission of fiscal and environmental stewardship,” said Mayor Stephanie M. Burke. “We are pleased to make these investments in and commitments to our community and remain dedicated to expanding our goal to be carbon neutral by 2050.”

Medford was able to install the solar array with no up-front costs through the Solect Energy and PowerOptions Solar Program. Under the program, Solect Energy financed, installed and will service the roof-top solar array, while the DPW receives the power generated at a fixed price for a period of 20 years under a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) negotiated with PowerOptions.

“At PowerOptions, our mission is to help communities save time and money on energy, so more resources can be directed toward serving the public,” said PowerOptions President and CEO Cynthia Arcate. “We applaud the City of Medford’s forward-thinking approach to energy and resiliency.”

Medford is committed to a region-wide effort towards a carbon neutrality goal by 2050, as part of the Boston Metro Mayors Coalition. As such, Medford has committed to reducing their carbon footprint and doing their part for climate change mitigation under the administration of Mayor Stephanie M. Burke. This leadership is supplemented by the City Council’s unanimous vote supporting the solar initiative last summer.

“Installing solar was always a part of the plan at the new DPW building, as it was constructed to be solar ready,” said Alicia Hunt, Director of Energy and Environment for the City of Medford. “Our partnership with PowerOptions was instrumental in executing projects and we are actively pursuing solar on other municipal buildings as well.”

In addition to the solar array, the new energy-efficient DPW building will be outfitted with an energy storage solution, and a fully functional micro-grid funded by a MA Department of Energy Resources (DOER) Community Clean Energy Resiliency Initiative Grant of $700,000. The City’s strategy is to harden the DPW and be resilient to increased potential of electric grid outages and provide continuous service in the event of an emergency.

“Solect commends the City of Medford for their renewable energy and resiliency initiatives,” said Matt Shortsleeve, Vice President of Development at Solect Energy. “We are proud to play a role in this project, and more broadly the City of Medford’s transition to clean and resilient operations.”
